When it comes to tummy tuck recovery, the most important thing to understand is that every patient is different. If you had a friend go through the same procedure and they were able to recover in six weeks, another might take eight. Having said that, it’s still important to get your own expectations in order so that you can plan ahead for the safest and most effective recovery process possible.
The Tummy Tuck Recovery Process: An Overview
Regardless of how long it takes you to recover from abdominoplasty, there are a few restrictions you’ll need to adhere to the entire time.
- If you’re a smoker, you were no doubt told to quit prior to having the procedure done. You should continue to refrain from smoking to avoid hiding your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
- During this period, you’ll also want to avoid any type of intense physical activity – which includes sex. At a bare minimum, you’ll need to refrain from sex for between three to six weeks. However, you should really go for the entire recovery period if you’re able to.
- About six weeks after the procedure, you may also be able to stop wearing any type of compression garment you were asked to wear by your surgeon.
Beyond that, it’s always key to listen to what your body is trying to tell you. As you approach the six-week mark, you’ll likely notice that you can resume some of your older physical activities without too much strain or any long-term issues. You’re obviously free to do so. However, be cautious and practice sound judgment until you’re feeling back to normal again. If you have any questions about your tummy tuck recovery process, our surgeons are here to help.
